Show and Tell

Believe it or not, this leftover from kindergarten is a powerful and fascinating way for students to explore theirs and other's sense of self. I ask students to bring in some personal item that is important to them - an item that reveals something significant about their identity (in psychoanalytic self psychology terms, a "selfobject"). After each student shows-and-tells, others give feedback about what they think the item says about the student, as well as share how they personally can relate to the student's show-and-tell.
