AAUP Negotiation Update #1

J. Halpern

The Executive Committee has named the negotiating team for the upcoming negotiations with the University. J. Halpern, Sociology will be Chief Negotiator, the other team members of the team are L. Bailey (Accounting), H. Gishlick (Economics), A. Kosar (Music Theory), J. Phillips (Music Theory) and N. Stander (Management). While this is a strong experienced team, we would like to add at least one more member from Arts and Sciences, or Education preferably a woman. If you are interested in serving, please contact me as soon as possible. The team has already begun to meet, to review the study committee reports (thanks to all the participants in the study committee process) and has begun to prepare our initial proposal. We hope to have our proposal completed by April 1 for review and adoption by the Executive Committee. A summary will be provided to the membership at the April Chapter meeting and we will exchange proposals with the administration on or about May 1 in preparation for the beginning of bargaining on June 1.

These negotiations can only be a success if the team has the full support of every member of the bargaining unit and in order for that to happen we must keep all of you informed of the ongoing process of the negotiations. As already mentioned a summary of our initial proposal (minus any elements that will not be shared with the administration) will be provided to the membership. Beyond that this is the first of the updates that we will produce and provide to the membership (with any luck on paper and over e-mail). Once negotiations begin we will establish a call in number where you can get the latest information on the progress of the talks. We also hope to establish a web page (we are looking for volunteers to be webmaster) where the latest information can be posted. Finally, if necessary there will be faculty meetings during the negotiations to inform membership of important developments. In order for all communication to work we must have accurate contact information for each bargaining unit member. To that end a questionnaire will be going out to you shortly so that we will know how to contact you during the semester and during the summer. On the same questionnaire we will be asking for volunteers to help in the process. The team cannot do all of the work necessary to bring our negotiations to a successful conclusion. We will need the help of many many of you. So when asked, please volunteer to help.
